A beach umbrella to add to your relaxation area

It's time to prepare and store your patio umbrella when you don't need to use it.

It's autumn and winter is coming, at least in many parts of the country! You should store or cover your parasol. Not sure how or the best way to 'winterise' your umbrella? Don't worry; we've compiled a list of tips for storing your beach umbrella and helping to ensure it's ready for next season!

Before storing your umbrella in the garage or shed for the winter, clean it thoroughly. If patio umbrellas are not stored properly, mould and mildew can grow on them, leading to unpleasant surprises the following spring when you try to put them back outside. Once your umbrellas are clean, both the poles and canopies can be completely dry. You don't want to store wet umbrellas!

Steps for storing your patio umbrella.
Make sure you close and tie your parasol properly. Many people just put their umbrellas away and tie them up with a string. Your outdoor parasol usually comes with a tether to secure the canopy. Close the canopy, then pull each panel and fold it over to the next. This reduces the chance of the fabric creasing during the long winter months.

Place your bottom pole inside the folded panel. Some people simply insert the bottom pole into the centre of the umbrella and close it. This is a bad idea. The pole can damage or scratch the umbrella bones.
Cover the exposed pole edge. This dose doesn't have to be complicated, a plastic bag or a folded piece of cardboard will do. This will help to protect the umbrella aluminium or attachment line from damage. It will also keep your hands and fingers safe!

Dry your beach umbrella completely. Most good quality umbrellas are treated with exposure, but it is always wise to make sure you wipe all the wooden parts to ensure they are dry. If the poles remain wet, water can cause unsightly staining of the wood and even warping of the poles.

Wrap or cover your patio umbrella with a commercial umbrella cover or heavy plastic. When you are ready to use it again next season, simply leave your umbrella in a cold garage or uncovered shed and you will have problems.

If possible, hang up your umbrella. Some umbrellas have hooks or attachments on the end (top trim piece) for hanging. Make good use of this! This is easy and will prevent your umbrella from coming loose in your storage area. Cross down your beach umbrella. If you can't hang your umbrella, put it on a large shelf or in a safe place if possible. This will prevent it from accidentally falling over and damaging it. If you have more than one umbrella, place them crosswise on the pole. This helps keep the umbrella comfortable and saves space.

Storing your patio umbrella base or stand.
As with the umbrella itself, this is the perfect time to clean the base to remove dirt before storing it. Mould can grow on dirt, so clean the base with soap and water and leave it to dry.

If you have a ballast water base, either empty it completely, remove it and store it indoors, or partially empty it and add 1-2 bottles of eco-friendly antifreeze. Then cover with a tarpaulin or heavy plastic bag.
